Open Courses

Earn college credit and have fun! We offer 2 courses through Montana Tech of the University of Montana: Wilderness Preparation (3 credits), and Rock Climbing (2 credits). For the military, you can earn CE credits through Montana Tech while attending Peak training.

Our Wilderness and First Aid courses are taught by Red Cross certified instructors and a 2-year certification is awarded upon completion of the course.

CPR/AED/FIRST AID TRAINING COURSE

Course Synopsis:

The Peak offers a Red Cross Certified course on the instruction for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Adult/Child/Infant, Breathing Emergencies, and the use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s).

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the basic skills to assess, respond, and provide initial care for an unconscious, unresponsive individual with cardiopulmonary arrest symptoms.

Course Design:

This course is a combination of lecture and skills-based training. It focuses on the ABC’s of emergency care; specifically Airways, Breathing, and Circulation. The course curriculum adheres to the guidelines and standards of the American Red Cross.

Equipment Provided By The Peak:

All textbooks, laboratory supplies, CPR mannequins, and AED trainers.

Certifications:

Participants will earn a CPR/AED certificate from American Red Cross, for Adult/Child/Infant.

BASIC NAVIGATION SKILLS TRAINING

Course Synopsis:

The Peak’s Basic Navigation Skills course teaches the student the characteristics of maps, map reading, compass use, and GPS Basic Skill.

Course Objectives:

The students will receive instruction and the opportunity to practice skills on the following objectives:

  • Characteristics of a map or chart
  • Coordinate systems
  • Characteristics of a compass
  • Determining magnetic declination
  • Take Bearing/Transferring Bearing onto Map
  • Located your position
  • GPS Basics Skills

 

Course Design:

The course is 4-6 hours of classroom instruction followed by an applied skills laboratory and compass course.

WILDERNESS & REMOTE FIRST AID TRAINING

Course Synopsis:

The Peak’s 2-day Wilderness and Remote First-Aid course focuses on assessment, treatment, and evacuation of casualties.

Course Objectives:

The OSHA standard at 29 CFR 1910.151(b) states:

“In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid…”

We developed this course to meet that standard for wilderness professionals, backcountry enthusiasts, and the recreational public will also benefit from this course by learning the basic scientific foundations of injury mechanisms as well as the identification, treatment, prevention, and evacuation guidelines for common wilderness injuries/ incidents.

Course Design:

This course is a combination of lecture and skills-based training. It focuses on minor trauma, selected environmental topics, and medical emergencies in a wilderness setting. The course curriculum adheres to the guidelines and standards of the American Red Cross.

Certifications:

Participants will earn a Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate from American Red Cross.

AVALANCHE AWARENESS COURSE

Course Synopsis:

The Peak’s Avalanche Awareness course concentrates on the techniques of hazard recognition and safe movement planning. It is for individuals and groups operating in avalanche danger zones.

Course Objectives:

The students will receive instruction and the opportunity to practice skills on the following objectives:

  • Avalanche path
  • Types of avalanches
  • Avalanche hazard evaluation
  • Human factor/actions if caught
  • Rescue action
  • Beacon characteristics and Operational Tests
  • Avalanche triggers
  • Signs/tests of instability
  • Search Methods

 

Course Design:

This course is a combination of lectures and skill-based training. Students will spend one day in the classroom and one day in the mountains practicing skills.

Equipment Requirements:

Cold Weather Apparel, Avalanche Beacon, Probe, and Shovel. Let us know if you have any shortfalls.

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL TRAINING

Course Synopsis:

The basic Wilderness Survival course is a two-day course focusing on survival in an alpine and/or mountainous environment. Students will learn survival techniques from highly experienced military survival instructors.

Course Objectives:

The students will receive instruction and the opportunity to practice skills on the following objectives:

  • Basic wilderness first-aid
  • Survivor Mindset
  • Survival Kit Contents
  • Edibility Tests
  • Water sources/purification
  • Fire craft
  • Shelter craft

 

Course Design:

The students will receive instruction and the opportunity to practice skills on the training objectives listed above.
